I’m getting tired of all the comparisons to “1984” and other dystopian novels, but one line from the classic is particularly striking these days:
He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future.
Amanda Shendruk and Catherine Rampell at the Washington Post have an EXCELLENT piece regarding how the Trump administration is handling statistics, taxpayer funded information, that it finds inconvenient. It really is must reading that you can find here: “How Trump is Reshaping Reality By Hiding Data.”
It really does a great job of describing the whole process. They do such a good job of it that I can’t add anything more to add to it. One chart I will point out though, nobody outside of Republicans believe Trump’s statistics.

It’s funny…. in polarized America data is no longer viewed as a way to help people understand issues but a way to promote one’s narrative. I see this misuse frequently from the far left in Portland, OR. “Data” is the new ideological cudgel
