Since it is practically win or go home (I’m bitter because the wolves lost one and were out), can’t we just make it a big tourney like march madness? Give a few teams with the best records byes in the first round, and do a single elimination tourney!
That's the beauty of the pool play early. They lost a game yes, but were win it right up until all the games in the pool completed, because the tiebreaks were head to head and then point differential.
That also makes the selection of the pools interesting. Have the random draws and broadcast it as a "Selection Show" or "Draft" and you'll get huge ratings.
They can't do the whole MM tourney, because teams that advance play more games. You can say that well, just pair losers up and play those, but that means teams are incentivized to lose in the first round, and rack up wins agains weaker competition. Imagine losing out on a playoff spot at the end of the year because some team played three games against tourney losers. Not good.
