Dee Snider, Twisted Sister Frontman, Gets It
Being an Ally Does Not Mean You Have to Be 100% Onboard on Every Issue
Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider was recently removed as Grand Marshall of the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade for “liking”1 a statement by KISS singer Paul Stanley disagreeing with the “fad of gender affirming care” for young kids. The statement, seen by organizers as “transphobic” caused them to distance themselves from Snider and rescind the invitation.
And Snider’s response was perfect, eloquent and should be the standard in how we deal with all political issues and people. Please take a moment to read.
Thank you Dee.
PurpleAmerica Cultural Criticism Corner
We can’t post something about Dee Snider and Twisted Sister without posting the classic video for one of the greatest rock anthems ever, “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”
Outstanding Tweet
Normally, I wouldn’t edit a post following publication because of a tweet, but this I think is a worthy exception.
We’re proud you are too Dee. Keep rocking hard. Listening to the House of Hair as I type this.2

Seriously, we need to stop associating an online social media “like” with a personal manifesto of total belief. It’s ridiculous. Sometimes, liking is just a notation to the person that you saw it. Other times, it can just be a pat on the back thanking them for stating THEIR opinion. Other times, it can just be, “hm.. interesting point.” Far too often people take it as a 100% agreeement of EVERYTHING that person stands for, which is hardly ever actually the case.
Big fan of the show and everything you do (and have ever done) for rock. If I can make a request, I’d like to ask for some Iron Maiden, “Run to the Hills” out of respect for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snub. They should be in, along with a ton of other metal acts the Hall just ignores.
