This pearl-clutching is silly. Maher doesn't care about validating and normalizing Trump because he knows we are way past that. Trump is president again. End of story. Time to rebuild the Democratic Party. We need it back.

I think you need to read JVL at the Bulwark to understand the fact that any normalization of Trump is dangerous.

I'll add, presenting a person as not being Satan is not “normalization.” It's actually knocking them off the pedestal people have built him up on and showing he's weak and human. And if he's a puny, he can be beaten.

Everyone still hates his policies just as they did before it.

I read him everyday. We're aligned in a lot of things and sometimes just disagree how to get there.

I disagree with him sometimes too.

I think that validating Trump in any way, shape, or form is wrong. He might be gracious in private, but that is not the persona that is destroying most everything good about America, our research, our Federal Agencies, our National Parks, Arts, Humanities. That is not the persona on a severe Revenge Tour or disappearing people to a third world hell hole prison. That is not the persona severely damaging the economy of the WHOLE world on a whim while raising the deficit to give huge tax cut to wealthy and corporations.

It’s one thing to talk to Trump voters. There’s no value in talking about this dynamic with Trump himself. He’s the main cause of it and he won’t change. Maher just wants to turn down the temperature for himself.

Maher is a rube who was manipulated the same way all the rubes he likes to mock are manipulated. The most telling part was not talking about Trump. It was his decades old repeated Clinton joke. It was when he was saying how he wouldn't feel comfortable talking to Obama or Clinton like he did Trump. That's because Maher is an effete, ignorant, elitist. He sees himself above the masses, but also below others. That's his own insecurity speaking, as both of those men are known as being peak convivial conversationalists.

Trump is identically built to Maher. That's why one-on-one he's not willing to say what he will on a stage, where cheers will drown out boos, and where he's removed challenges to his nonsense. Maher, being the naive simpleton than he is, was simply starstruck and fell for the grift that Trump has being using for decades (especially in the trappings of the White House). It should not go without noting that Maher couldn't resist fanning the flames of the Trans panic on behalf of Trump, despite another show on his own network just having dismantled the absurdity of it. What should we expect next from Maher, some hard-hitting humor about Welfare Queens?

Stalin was also gracious when he wanted to be. So?

Maher's NOT stupid and he's NOT normalizing anything. Maher is far smarter/knowledgable than trump, so he won't be manipulated by trump. You just don't get what Maher is trying to do. Listening to the "enemy" has become a lost art.
